Apple considers hydrogen batteries

ZoomApple considers hydrogen batteries
Computer giant Apple recently applied for patents for hydrogen batteries, which may make lighter batteries that are more energy efficient and therefore last longer perhaps for weeks at a time. The batteries would also be more environmentally friendly.

According to experts hydrogen batteries work by splitting water into its core chemical components, then using those chemicals to generate electricity, but for many years the reaction was too volatile for most commercial applications.

Dr Daniel Nocera of MIT discovered the new technique in 2008, which involved the standard process of electrolysis, in which a current is run through a liquid and used to split apart its chemical components. In this case, water was broken down into oxygen and hydrogen, which could be stored and recombined to power a hydrogen fuel cell.

According to Apple Insider the company filed a patent last year for a simpler version of the hydrogen cell.
