According to reports in the Chinese media a solar highway will be completed in China before the end of December by Qilu Transportation Development Group. The solar highway is being constructed in Jinan, the capital of eastern China's Shandong Province.
The road has three layers, with solar panels that are protected by transparent concrete at the surface. Engineers from Tongji University developed the technology for the project with the aim of eventually being able to charge electric vehicles as they drive along it, provide data on traffic flow and manage driverless fleets.
Earlier this year the university built a 660-square meter solar-powered pavement in Jinan to trial the university's solar-powered concrete slabs. These slabs are able to use some of the electricity gleaned to heat up and melt snow and ice.
