Materials research for better energy storage

UES Inc has been awarded a $45,000,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract by the US Air Force for research and development efforts for the Soft Organic Functional Technology program. Contractor will provide research, development, and technical transition of biotechnology, biologically derived or inspired materials, flexible electronic materials, and devices for energy storage. Work will be performed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and is expected to be complete by Dec. 30, 2021.
 
The US Air Force has also awarded UES Inc a $32.3 million, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract under the Composites Hybrids And Metals Materials and Processes (CHAMMP) research program. CHAMMP's objective is to develop materials and processing methodologies to create advanced materials and devices for future Air Force assets and weapon systems.
 
A team of over 20 scientific and support personnel from UES will assist the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in this effort. UES will provide with research capabilities in Ceramic Materials and Processes; and Metals Materials and Processes.
 
Program Manager Kristen Keller remarked, "UES has a great team, and we expect to continue to provide solid support for AFRL research activity". The 6-year CHAMMP program is a successor to the US Air Force's Metallic and Ceramic Materials Research (MCMR) program.
 
Perovskite Photovoltaics 2018-2028
UES, a Dayton-based science and technology firm and 2015 R&D100 Award Finalist, was a key contributor to MCMR. Dr. Triplicane Parthasarathy, Division Director for Materials and Processes, said, "UES is proud to have partnered with AFRL to develop two major high temperature structural materials—gamma titanium aluminides and ceramic matrix composites—which are finding application in the next generation of turbine engines".
 
Dr. Nina Joshi, CEO, believes that UES' success is due in part to its unique strengths in managing and executing research projects. "This contract complements and continues our research work in the Materials areas at AFRL since 1984. That's a historical relationship of great value to us". She adds, "We're honored to be a long-term partner in this effort and we are committed to this program's success."
